A Powerful Weapon Against Breast Cancer
The war against breast cancer got a powerful ally in the summer of 2010, when TEPAS Breast Center first offered positron emission mammography (PEM).
This type of mammography, the first in Brevard, increases the ability to view and diagnose early-stage breast cancers. PEM scanners offer high-resolution breast imaging that show not only location, but also the metabolic phase of a lesion as small as a grain of rice, significantly improving physicians’ ability to differentiate between benign and cancerous tissues and allowing for more opportunities for breast conservation.
“PEM’s advanced imaging capabilities are better able to show the extent of the disease, so we can choose the optimal course of treatment, provide surgical guidance and monitor for recurrence,” said TEPAS Breast Center’s Dr. Emran Imami.
