TEPAS Breast Center Recognized for Advanced Breast Cancer Treatment
MELBOURNE, FL – July 6, 2010 – TEPAS Breast Center, a comprehensive breast screening, diagnostic and treatment facility, recently received a Distinguished Achievement Award for excellence in accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) for its use of the SAVI™ applicator. The SAVI applicator is an advanced treatment for breast cancer as part of breast conservation therapy and provides important advantages for women with early-stage breast cancer.
The Distinguished Achievement Award recognizes TEPAS Breast Center’s dedication to education, training and experience in APBI. To qualify, the center’s surgeon and clinical staff completed a comprehensive training program and demonstrated a commitment to patient awareness of advanced breast cancer treatments.
Most women with breast cancer opt for a lumpectomy, thereby preserving their breast. Women then need radiation treatments to the breast, which usually lasts six weeks. Women with early stage breast cancer may choose SAVI, which conveniently provides radiation to the lumpectomy site. This typically involves two treatments per day for only 5 days. SAVI treats only the tumor bed so the patient is exposed to less radiation. This minimizes radiation exposure to healthy tissue, which reduces damage to critical structures such as the skin, heart, lungs and ribs.
“This sophisticated treatment option allows precise fit to breast and cavity size and custom dosing. Women enjoy better cosmetic results and lower anxiety by completing radiation treatment in 5 days versus six weeks,” said Emran Imami, M.D., F.A.C.S., board-certified general and breast surgeon.
Dr. Imami is among the first surgeons in the U.S. to provide SAVI and TEPAS Breast Center is one of only three facilities within 80 miles of Melbourne to offer this advanced technology.
SAVI was developed by Cianna Medical, Inc. (www.ciannamedical.com), a women’s health company dedicated to breast cancer treatment. SAVI was developed so more women can choose breast conservation therapy without a major interruption in their daily life. To learn more, visit www.savisisters.com.
