Our own radiographer Meghan Schultz R.T.(R)(M)(BD) was recently a guest on The Invisible Diaries, a podcast highlighting the struggles of those with illnesses we can’t always see. This is a great podcast hosted by Misti and Amber who both have experience with invisible chronic illnesses and share their wisdom to raise awareness and help others. There Meghan discussed very important topics about breast cancer awareness, such as self-examinations, mammograms, and general breast health.
Meghan graduated from the radiology program at EFSC in 2010, and specializes in radiology, mammography, and bone densitometry. She has been indispensable here at Tepas Breast Center and helped implement the 3D mammography system here, the first in Brevard county!
On the podcast she gave some great advice for both men and women such as how to perform self-examinations at home, who should be worrying about it, and at what age you should start (it’s earlier than you might think). Monthly checks let you get familiar with your body’s normal, to know exactly when something isn’t right. Knowing the signs is very important to preventing serious issues! It also helps you to clearly communicate with your doctor, and to be better informed to know what you need and what’s best for your specific situation.
She also talked about how mammography works, and how ultrasound and MRI are also used to together diagnose potential breast health problems. She explained why regular screenings are important for early detection of breast health issues, and how it helps to improve treatment.
Meghan also shared some personal stories about how she got into medicine, what inspired her, and some of her experiences so far. These helped shape who she is as a person and a medical professional, and we’re proud to have her with us and to have her share her expertise with the public.
We would like to thank Amber and Misti for having Meghan on for such a good cause.
